PMI / PMBOK Definition:

Portfolio: A collection of projects or programs and other work that are grouped together to facilitate effective management of that work to meet strategic business objectives. The projects or programs of the portfolio may not necessary be interdependent or directly related.

Portfolio Management: The centralized management of one or more portfolios, which includes identifying, prioritizing, authorizing, managing, and controlling projects, programs, and other related work, to achieve specific strategic business objectives.

OGC/ APMG / PRINCE2 Definition:

Portfolio: All the programmes and stand-alone projects being undertaken by an organization, a group of organizations, or an organizational unit.

Programme Management: Portfolio management is the selection and management of all of an organisation’s projects, programmes and related business-as-usual activities taking into account resource constraints. A portfolio is a group of projects and programmes carried out under the sponsorship of an organisation. Portfolios can be managed at an organisational, programme or functional level.
