History of Coffee

The most popular story about the history of coffee is originated from Ethiopia about a shepherd who discovered a strange phenomenon from his flock. The shepherd discovered his goats became extremely excited after eating some fruit from the wild coffee trees. Out of curiosity, he tasted the coffee fruit. After a taste, because the effect of coffee beans, he was jumping like the  goats as well, started dancing excitedly. Some passing by religious monks saw this scene. They tried out the coffee fruit too and experienced the energizing moment. Thus, whenever there is need for religious ceremonies in the evening, these monks drink the soup with boiled coffee beans, in this way to keep themselves awake. From Ethiopia, the "miracle drug" was introduced to Arab world and slowly became popular in Europe then throughout the world.

Coffee was originally called "qahwahin" in Arabia. However, it was from the Turkish word "kahveh" that the modern words for "coffee" are derived.

Coffee Beans

Arabica - The official name is Coffea arabica. It accounts for 75-80 percent of the world's coffee bean production. It was originally found in the south western highlands of Ethiopia. Arabica beans grow at high altitudes. Arabica coffee is grown throughout Latin America (Brazil & Columbia etc), in Central and East Africa, in India and some areas in Indonesia.  Arabica bean is more acidic in flavour but more aromatic as compared to Robusta bean. Arabica beans have half the caffeine of the Robusta bean.

Robusta - The official name is Coffea canephora. It accounts for around 20 percent of the world's production. It has its origins in central and western sub-Saharan Africa. However, Robusta bean is mostly grown in Vietnam now.  Robusta beans grow at lower elevations and are easier to grow compared to Arabia bean. Thus, it is cheaper to produce than Arabia bean. Robusta bean produces a woodier, sour flavour. It is usually taste more bitter than Arabica It is often included in instant coffee. Robusta has roughly twice as much caffeine as Arabica.
